Long Bay is a coastal reserve and beach on the eastern side of Auckland's North Shore, facing the Hauraki Gulf approximately 25 km north of Auckland's CBD. It sits within the Long Bay-Okura Marine Reserve, which extends from the beach south to the Okura River mouth. The beach itself is a gently curving bay about 700 m long, backed by the Long Bay Regional Park — a substantial area of coastal farmland, pohutukawa forest, and regenerating bush that has been protected since 1956. Rocky headlands enclose the bay at each end, with the southern headland dropping into the marine reserve. The foreshore is sandy with scattered rock platforms exposed at low tide.
Long Bay experiences semidiurnal tides consistent with the broader Hauraki Gulf, with a spring tidal range of approximately 2.8 to 3.2 m. The tidal change is significant and the beach width varies considerably: at low tide the sandy beach is wide with rock platforms and pools exposed, offering good exploration opportunities; at high tide the beach narrows substantially and the rock platform areas are submerged. The Long Bay-Okura Marine Reserve encompasses the intertidal and subtidal zone south of the main beach; tidal state governs access to the shallow reef habitats within the reserve.
Summer (December to February) is the primary season for swimming and snorkelling, with water temperatures reaching 19–22 °C. The beach is popular with families and is busy on summer weekends and holidays; early morning or weekday visits are quieter. The marine reserve is best explored for snorkelling at low tide in calm conditions (January to March). Autumn (March to April) offers warm water with declining crowds. The regional park walking tracks are accessible year-round, including a cliff-top track with excellent gulf views.
Long Bay is patrolled by lifeguards in summer; swim between the flags. The northern end of the beach near the headland has rocky outcrops that can be slippery — wear suitable footwear when exploring the rock platforms. Within the marine reserve, collecting or disturbing any marine life is illegal — this includes fish, shellfish, and invertebrates. Stingrays rest in sandy patches; shuffle when wading in shallow water. Boat traffic in the gulf is active in summer; be visible when swimming beyond the flagged zone. UV levels are high; the lack of shade on the open beach makes sun protection important.
The Long Bay-Okura Marine Reserve means the reef and rocky habitat directly off the southern headland are in noticeably better condition than comparable unprotected sites — fish are less wary and more abundant. The snorkelling directly from the beach into the reserve is accessible without a boat. The regional park behind the beach provides over 10 km of walking tracks through coastal bush and farmland to the Okura River estuary, making this a combined beach and bushwalk destination. It is one of the few places on Auckland's urban fringe where the coastal reserve, marine reserve, and regional park overlap to create a genuinely cohesive natural environment.
