Subic Bay is a deep natural harbor on the western coast of Luzon, facing the South China Sea. The town of Subic, Zambales, sits at the southern entrance of the bay, while the former US Naval Station Subic Bay — now the Subic Bay Freeport Zone — occupies the eastern and northern shores. The bay is flanked by the Zambales Mountains and the Bataan Peninsula, creating a well-protected anchorage historically valued for its depth and shelter. The surrounding watershed is mostly forested, with clear water maintained partly due to limited industrial runoff within the freeport zone.
Subic Bay experiences a mixed semidiurnal tidal pattern with a typical range of 0.7 to 1.2 meters. The bay's enclosed shape dampens wave action considerably; even during periods of elevated wind, wave heights inside the bay remain manageable compared to the open South China Sea. This makes the bay suitable for diving and water sports year-round from a wave standpoint, though wind-driven chop can affect surface conditions.
The amihan (northeast monsoon, December–May) is the dry season on this part of Luzon and the preferred time for diving and snorkeling — visibility in the bay is typically best from January through April. The habagat (June–November) brings rain and occasional typhoon threats; Zambales sees fewer direct typhoon hits than the Pacific-facing provinces but remains within the Philippine typhoon belt. August and September tend to be the wettest months.
Several WWII-era and more recent wrecks lie on the bay floor and are popular dive sites, but should only be dived with guides familiar with their depths and conditions — some are in the 20–30 meter range. Boat traffic within the freeport zone is regulated; swimmers should stay within designated areas and be aware of vessel movement near the port facilities. The bay's fringing reefs have some boat-strike hazards for inexperienced snorkelers near drop-offs.
The wreck diving at Subic Bay is among the best in the Philippines. The USS New York, El Capitan, and other wrecks host dense marine life including large schools of batfish, lionfish, and occasional reef sharks. The freeport infrastructure — an inheritance from the US Navy — means facilities are unusually well-developed: paved roads, clear signage, and regulated commercial zones. The Zoobic Safari and other eco-tourism facilities within the former base add non-marine activities to the area.
