Olongapo City sits at the southern end of Subic Bay, directly adjacent to — and largely surrounding — the Subic Bay Freeport Zone. The city developed largely in relation to the former US Naval Station Subic Bay, which was the largest American overseas military installation until its closure in 1992. The Olongapo River (now channeled) runs through the city center to the bay. The waterfront has a mix of the channel, commercial port areas, and some recreational zones. The Zambales Mountains rise immediately behind the city, and the forested watershed within the former base forms a green backdrop.
Olongapo shares Subic Bay's tidal regime: mixed semidiurnal tides with a range of approximately 0.7 to 1.2 meters. The bay's orientation and depth provide good shelter from South China Sea swells. Tidal currents in the outer bay area near the entrance can be stronger than in the inner bay where Olongapo sits. The inner bay location means wave action at the Olongapo waterfront is minimal under most weather conditions.
The amihan season (December–May) is the most reliably dry period. January through April offer the most pleasant conditions for both land and water activities. The habagat (June–November) brings heavier rainfall and occasional typhoon proximity, though the mountains behind Olongapo provide some shelter from the strongest Pacific systems. The bay itself offers protected water throughout the year — the question is typically rainfall intensity rather than wave conditions.
Olongapo City's urban waterfront is adjacent to active port and commercial operations; recreational access to the water within the city itself is limited. The main diving and water activities are accessed within the Subic Bay Freeport Zone (which requires a vehicle gate pass for non-registered users). Swimming in the inner bay near the city center is not recommended due to vessel traffic and water quality from urban runoff and the channeled river. The dive sites on wreck and reef areas deeper in the bay should be done with licensed operators.
Olongapo is the gateway city for the Subic Bay Freeport Zone, and much of the visitor infrastructure — hotels, restaurants, transportation — is organized around this connection. The city's identity has been shaped by decades of proximity to the US Navy, and this history is visible in the urban layout, food culture, and commercial DNA of the city. For maritime history enthusiasts, the WWII wreck sites in the adjacent Subic Bay — including Japanese vessels sunk during the war — are among the most historically significant dive sites in the Philippines. Dungaree Beach within the freeport offers a sheltered swimming area with facilities.
