Cottesloe Beach is Perth's most prominent metropolitan beach, located about 12 km southwest of the city centre on the eastern shore of the Indian Ocean. The beach faces due west and receives open ocean swell from the southwest through northwest. A limestone reef — the Cottesloe reef system — runs parallel to the coast and moderates some wave energy, creating a relatively sheltered swimming zone between the reef and shore. The sand is white, coarse, and derived from carbonate sediments. The Indian Ocean Biological Survey lists this stretch of coast as ecologically significant for its marine diversity.
Perth is one of the most microtidal coastal cities in Australia. The tidal range at Cottesloe is typically only 0.4 to 0.8 m, among the smallest of any major Australian coastal settlement. The tide pattern is also unusual — it transitions between diurnal (one high and one low per day) and semidiurnal depending on the lunar cycle. During some parts of the month there may be only one noticeable tidal cycle per day. For swimmers and snorkellers this means water depth and coastal access change very little with the tide; the reef and beach conditions are primarily driven by swell and wind rather than tidal state.
Summer (December to February) is warm and popular, with water temperatures reaching 22–24 °C and consistent afternoon sea breezes — locally known as the Fremantle Doctor — cooling the beach from around 2 pm. Spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May) offer more manageable conditions without peak crowds. Winter (June to August) is mild by Australian standards (15–18 °C air) with water temperatures around 18–19 °C. Swell is larger and more frequent in winter, attracting surfers to nearshore breaks.
Rip currents can form in channels between reef sections after larger swells; swim between the flags at patrolled areas. Blue-ringed octopus inhabit the rocky reef zones — never handle any octopus found in rock pools or on the reef. Stonefish and other venomous reef fish are present; wear reef shoes when walking on exposed rock. UV index in Perth is very high — the latitude and clear skies produce dangerous sun exposure even in autumn and winter. Sharks are an ongoing consideration; Perth has a surf monitoring and shark alert network (SharkSmart) that provides real-time beach status updates.
The limestone reef at Cottesloe provides snorkelling accessible directly from the beach — unusual for a metropolitan urban beach. The annual Sculpture by the Sea exhibition (March) installs large-scale artworks along the beachfront and into the water. The Indiana Tea House, a restored colonial-era building on the foreshore, is an architectural landmark. Sunsets over the Indian Ocean from Cottesloe are among the most celebrated in Australia.
