Bondi Beach sits on Sydney's eastern coastline, facing the Tasman Sea roughly 8 km from the city centre. The beach is a 1 km crescent of sand flanked by sandstone headlands — Ben Buckler to the north and Mackenzies Point to the south. It is one of the most visited urban beaches in the world, and the surrounding suburb is dense and walkable, with the water visible from the streets behind the promenade.
The coastal walk south from Bondi through Tamarama, Bronte, and Coogee is a well-maintained clifftop path offering continuous ocean views. The seabed off Bondi is predominantly sand with rocky reef sections near the headlands.
Bondi experiences semidiurnal tides — two high tides and two low tides per day — with a moderate tidal range of roughly 1.0 to 1.5 m. The difference between neap and spring tides is noticeable but not dramatic. Low tide exposes more sand on the beach face and reveals rock pools at the headlands. The tidal cycle does not dramatically change swimming conditions here; surf and rip current patterns are the more significant daily variable.
Summer (December to February) brings warm water temperatures around 22–24 °C and long daylight hours, though the beach is crowded and UV levels are extreme. Autumn (March to May) is often the most comfortable season — crowds thin, water stays warm from summer, and the surf remains consistent. Winter (June to August) sees air temperatures drop to 10–15 °C but the water stays above 17 °C. Spring (September to November) is pleasant with warming temperatures and manageable crowd levels.
Rip currents are the primary hazard at Bondi. The beach is known for powerful, channelled rips that can quickly pull swimmers offshore. Always swim between the red and yellow flags patrolled by lifeguards. If caught in a rip, float calmly and signal for help rather than fighting the current. UV index regularly exceeds 11 in summer — apply SPF 50+ sunscreen and reapply every 90 minutes. Bluebottle jellyfish (Portuguese man-of-war) wash ashore during northerly winds, particularly in summer; their stings are painful but rarely dangerous. Rinse with seawater, not fresh water.
Bondi is rare in combining genuine surf culture, a working-class beach history, and proximity to a major city. The Bondi Icebergs ocean pool at the southern end has operated since 1929 and offers year-round lap swimming in seawater. The beach supports a competitive surf lifesaving club and hosts regular surf carnivals. The headland-to-headland coastal walk is one of the finest short walks in Australia.
