Geographic Overview

Dagupan is a city in the province of Pangasinan on the southern shore of the Lingayen Gulf. It is built across a low-lying delta laced with rivers, channels and fishponds, and the Pantal River is among the waterways that run through it. With so much of the land close to water level, streets, homes and ponds are closely tied to the gulf. Nearby towns along the gulf include Lingayen, Binmaley and San Fabian. Tondaligan Beach faces the open waters of the gulf.

Tides in this part of the Lingayen Gulf are mixed: some days bring one main high and one main low, while on others a second, smaller high and low appear. The dry season, when the northeast amihan winds prevail, is generally the most comfortable time to visit, with less rain and more settled weather. The habagat, the southwest monsoon, brings heavy rain, and typhoons can add to it. Beach time at Tondaligan is best on calmer dry-season days, when the gulf is gentler. Dagupan is also known for its bangus, or milkfish, which is central to the city's identity and appears on menus in many forms. Safety Tips

In Dagupan, the tide matters on land as much as at the beach. When a high tide coincides with heavy monsoon rain or swollen rivers, low-lying streets can flood, because the water cannot drain to the gulf. Check the day's high tide times before travelling across town during the rainy season, and if heavy rain is forecast near high water, allow extra time or choose a different hour.
