Boracay is a small island — approximately 7 kilometers long and 1 kilometer wide at its narrowest — located off the northwestern tip of Panay Island in Aklan province. The island faces the Sibuyan Sea to the east and the Sulu Sea to the west. White Beach, a 4-kilometer arc of fine white sand on the western shore, is the island's most developed coastline. Bulabog Beach on the eastern side faces the Sibuyan Sea and receives different wind and wave conditions, making it suited for different activities. The island is accessed by ferry from Caticlan jetty on the Panay mainland.
Boracay experiences mixed semidiurnal tides with moderate diurnal inequality. Tidal range is relatively small — typically 0.7 to 1.1 meters — and the island's exposure to open water on both sides means that wind-driven wave action often exceeds tidal influence on conditions. The gentle gradient of White Beach means low tide exposes a wider sandy flat but rarely creates hazardous conditions. On Bulabog Beach, tidal level can affect the depth available for kitesurfers during calmer periods.
White Beach on the western shore is calmest during the amihan season (November–May), when northeast trade winds keep the western side sheltered and produce flat, clear water. This is also peak tourist season and significantly busier. The habagat (June–October) reverses the dynamic — White Beach receives southwest swell and wind, while Bulabog Beach on the east becomes calm. Kitesurfing and windsurfing at Bulabog peak during habagat season, particularly July through October. Boracay was fully closed for a six-month rehabilitation in 2018 and has since reopened with stricter environmental controls.
Motorized boats were prohibited from White Beach following the 2018 rehabilitation, which substantially improved swimming safety along the main beach. Non-motorized watercraft are still permitted; watch for paraw sailboats and paddle craft near the shoreline. Bulabog Beach has active kitesurfing traffic — swimming in the kite zone is dangerous and clearly marked areas should be respected. Currents around the northern and southern tips of the island can be strong. Jellyfish, including box jellyfish, have been reported seasonally; ask locally before swimming at dusk or dawn.
White Beach's sand quality — fine, powder-soft, and consistently maintained — is genuinely distinctive and accounts for the island's sustained popularity. The beach remains walkable and swimmable along most of its length without the hazardous boat traffic common at other busy Philippine beaches. Bulabog Beach hosts one of the most active kitesurfing communities in Asia, with a regular competition calendar during habagat season. The island's small size means multiple beaches and environments are within walking or tricycle distance, and the sunset view from White Beach over the Sulu Sea is consistently clear during the dry season.
