Tacloban is the capital city of Leyte province, situated on the northwestern shore of San Pedro Bay, which opens into the broader Leyte Gulf. The city faces southeast toward the gulf, with the Samar coast visible across the water. San Juanico Strait separates Leyte from Samar just north of the city, and the San Juanico Bridge — one of the longest bridges in the Philippines — spans this narrow channel. The coastline along the downtown area is low-lying and fronts directly onto San Pedro Bay, making it highly exposed to surge events during typhoons.
Tacloban experiences a mixed semidiurnal tidal pattern, with two unequal high tides and two unequal low tides per day. The tidal range is relatively modest, typically between 0.8 and 1.4 meters under normal conditions. Leyte Gulf's semi-enclosed geometry can amplify storm surges dramatically — during Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) in November 2013, a surge estimated at 5–7 meters inundated the coastal barangays, an event that fundamentally altered how local government and residents think about coastal risk.
The dry season runs from December through May under the influence of the amihan (northeast monsoon). January through April offer the most stable, rain-free weather for coastal activities. The habagat (southwest monsoon) arrives around June and persists through November, bringing heavier rainfall and elevated typhoon risk. Tacloban sits in one of the most typhoon-prone corridors in the Philippines; November in particular has historically seen destructive landfalls.
Always check PAGASA advisories before any sea activity. San Pedro Bay can become rough quickly during the habagat season. The coastal barangays east of the city center remain designated as high-risk storm surge zones — residents and visitors should know evacuation routes. Swimming directly off the urban waterfront is not common; boat trips into the bay should be arranged through licensed operators who monitor weather conditions.
Tacloban is a working port city with deep historical significance — it served as General MacArthur's landing point during the 1944 liberation of the Philippines. The Leyte Gulf itself was the site of the largest naval battle in history. Post-Haiyan reconstruction has made the city a case study in disaster resilience. Sport fishing for tuna and other pelagics is available in the open gulf, and the passage through San Juanico Strait is a scenic boat route with strong currents that make it interesting for experienced paddlers.
