Geographic Overview

Puerto Princesa is the capital and primary urban center of Palawan province, located roughly midway along Palawan's eastern coast. The city's waterfront faces Honda Bay, a sheltered bay dotted with small islands that provides calm anchorage and recreational boating access. Honda Bay opens into the Sulu Sea to the east. The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — is located about 80 kilometers north of the city and accessible by boat from Sabang. The city sits at the base of a mountainous spine that runs the length of Palawan island.

Tidal Characteristics

Puerto Princesa and Honda Bay experience mixed semidiurnal tides with noticeable diurnal inequality. Tidal range in Honda Bay is moderate, typically between 1.0 and 1.6 meters. The bay's sheltered geometry moderates swell but does not significantly dampen tidal range. Low tides expose seagrass and coral areas around the smaller islands of Honda Bay, which affects snorkeling depth and boat navigation to island beaches. Tide timing is important when planning island-hopping trips, as some shallow channels between islands become impassable at low water.

Best Times to Visit

Puerto Princesa sits on the eastern side of Palawan and is more sheltered from the habagat (June–November) compared to the western coast. However, the overall Palawan climate sees peak dry conditions from November through May. The amihan brings the most reliable calm water and clear skies for Honda Bay island hopping and boat trips to the underground river. The wet season can bring heavy rainfall and reduced visibility, though the underground river itself remains accessible for much of the year depending on water levels.

Safety Tips

Honda Bay island hopping is conducted in licensed outrigger boats; wear provided life jackets, which are required. The bay is generally calm, but afternoon thunderstorms can develop quickly during the wet season — morning departures are advisable. The underground river entrance involves a boat trip through a coastal cave system; follow guide instructions carefully as ceiling hazards are present. Some of Honda Bay's islands have sea urchins on shallow reef approaches — water shoes are recommended for exits onto these beaches. Sunscreen regulations near reef areas have been introduced; biodegradable formulas are expected.

Puerto Princesa's primary marine attraction is Honda Bay, where a collection of small islands with white-sand beaches, coral gardens, and resident sea turtles can be visited on organized island-hopping routes. The underwater environment around Starfish Island and Pandan Island is accessible to non-divers by snorkeling. The city is also the main gateway for accessing El Nido and Coron in northern Palawan, and for the underground river — one of the longest navigable underground river systems in the world, running through a cave system that opens directly onto a beach.
