Batangas City sits at the southeastern tip of Luzon, at the head of Batangas Bay — a roughly circular bay that opens southward into the Verde Island Passage. This passage, separating Luzon from Mindoro, is recognized by marine biologists as one of the centers of marine biodiversity on Earth due to its extraordinary species richness. The city operates one of the most active Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) ferry ports in the Philippines, connecting Luzon to Mindoro, Palawan, and the Visayas. The coastline alternates between industrial port areas and fishing communities.
Batangas experiences mixed semidiurnal tides. The daily tidal range is typically 0.6 to 1.1 meters, somewhat lower than the Pacific-facing coasts. The Verde Island Passage generates strong tidal currents — at peak flow, channels between islands can run at 3–5 knots, creating conditions that favor experienced divers and mariners but require caution from casual users.
The amihan season (December–May) delivers the most consistent dry weather. March through May see the calmest sea states in Batangas Bay itself, while the Verde Island Passage diving sites are generally accessible year-round with appropriate planning. During habagat (June–November), southwesterly swells from the South China Sea can work around the Batangas coastline, and typhoon passages reduce visibility significantly. October and November are transitional months when conditions can shift rapidly.
The Verde Island Passage dive sites — including the famous Verde Island wall — are subject to strong and unpredictable currents. Drift diving is the norm; divers should use surface marker buoys (SMBs) and ensure their boat crew maintains visual contact throughout. The Batangas port area has heavy vessel traffic from RoRo ferries; recreational boats and kayaks should maintain clear distance from ferry lanes. Jellyfish blooms occur occasionally during warmer months.
The Verde Island Passage dive sites offer some of the most diverse coral ecosystems in the Philippines. Anilao, a short drive from Batangas City, is particularly renowned for macro photography — nudibranchs, frogfish, and pygmy seahorses are reliably found by skilled guides. Muck diving at sites like Arthur's Rock attracts underwater photographers from around the world. Beyond diving, Batangas Bay supports a large artisanal fishing fleet, and the bangus (milkfish) and tuna industries are economically significant to the city.
